After many years downtown, The Filipino Centre relocated to the Sheppard East Village in 2018. The Filipino Centre is designed to allow people from the Philippines to share in their culture and meet other people with similar values.
Mary Ann likes the location because it’s so visible and many people will see the sign every day. Many groups tour the facilities and rent the space for events, meetings and special occasions.
She has been a very dedicated volunteer for many years, keeping the facility running smoothly. She was excited to get seven full-time employees through a government program and she also has high-school student volunteers that help tutor students who require a little extra help with their studies – at no cost.
Mary Ann has a long history of working in children’s libraries, so it is no surprise that she is a big reader. She is still a big user of libraries and rarely actually owns a book. When people come to her house and ask where her books are, she always says, “all over the city.”
What you might not know about Mary Ann is that she excels in dragon boat racing. After beginning with a recreational team, she worked hard and eventually ended up on a competitive team of 20 rowers. She travels with the team and has the unique ability to row on either side of the boat – which makes her even more in demand.
